General questions and answers

Q1:How long will the new main battery power the laptop?
A:Battery run-time of a laptop is very difficult to determine. Actual battery run-time depends upon the power demands of the equipment which is determined by the usage and settings of the laptop. The use of the screen, hard disc drive and other components and accessories results in an additional drain on the battery, effectively reducing it’s run-time. The total run-time of the battery is also dependent upon the design of the equipment.

Q2:Why is the battery capacity lowered while left unused?
A:Due to influences of ambient humidity and non-absolute insulation environments, batteries experience a phenomenon known as self-consumption. Dependent upon the quality of the internal battery cells, the charge would decline around 1% every 3 – 4 days, so it is quite normal if the charge is not lowered in a major way.

Q3:Should I remove the battery when using the AC adaptor?
A:Usually laptop charging function starts charging when charge is less than 95% and because the natural consumption phenomenon exists, it does not make a difference whether you unplug the AC power or leave it connected to the laptop. It is suggested that you leave the battery inside the laptop which will facilitate ongoing operation and prevent data loss if the AC power is abruptly interrupted. If you want to take the battery out, you are advised to keep it in a cool, dry place and remember to exercise (charge/discharge) the battery at least once a month to keep the internal circuitry active.

Q4:Will battery life decrease if I charge it when it is not fully discharged?
A:Battery life is calculated by full charge/discharge cycles, Li-ion batteries usually have a 500 cycle lifespan. You do not need to worry about the battery cycle count decreasing a full cycle when it is charged a small amount, on average a full cycle is only accumulated when the battery is charged to 80 or 90%.

Q5:Battery capacity still shows 0% even after 20 hours of continuous charging and the laptop shuts down immediately when the AC adaptor is unplugged, what is the problem?
A:The first thing you need to do is, A: Check the contacts between the laptop and the battery because if the contact is not good, including the communication of data between them, the battery cannot be charged. Since the laptop battery slot may become disfigured after extended periods of use, the battery’s plastic casing is designed according to new laptop specifications, this may cause contact issues. Under these circumstances, please remove the battery and replace it back into the laptop several times to ensure adequate contact. When you hear the “Click” that basically means that the contact is good. Try this repeatedly and it may resolve your contact issues, especially with IBM laptops. B: The battery is not compatible with the laptop. C: The battery is faulty.

Q6:The battery is not discharging and the laptop shuts down immediately after unplugging the AC adaptor when the battery is charged to a certain percentage or even 100%, why?
A:When such a case occurs, A: please make note of the ambient temperature of the immediate environment in which the battery is operating. If you are in an environment with a very high temperature, the battery will automatically protect itself after extended use and the laptop’s start up procedure will stop functioning. At this time, please turn off your laptop and restart it after waiting 1 hour. Another possibility is that a problem may have developed during the charging process as the laptop’s charging circuit can easily develop problems when accepting a charge. Please insert your laptop’s original battery to see if that works. B: The battery is not compatible with the laptop. C: The battery may be faulty.

Q7:My laptop does not recognise the battery and shows a warning message: “The battery is not compatible with this laptop model, please insert the original battery” and the battery indicator blinks continuously, what is wrong?
A:This almost always indicates that there is a compatibility issue between the battery and the laptop. If you encounter this issue, please contact Laptop Accessories Support for assistance or for a replacement or a refund to be authorised if necessary.

Q8:My laptop shuts down immediately when I insert the battery but it worked without any issues when the battery was removed, why?
A:This indicates that, A: the battery is faulty and you will need a new replacement battery. B: The laptop’s motherboard may have developed a fault.

Q9:The laptop works perfectly with the battery and the AC adaptor connected separately, but are unable to be used simultaneously, why?
A:The laptop’s motherboard may have developed a fault.

Q10:My battery always causes the laptop to shut down without warning and consequently goes into hibernation. This has happened several times and can now only be used for a very short period of time even after being fully charged, why?
A:The laptop’s motherboard may have developed a fault. When such an issue arises, please refer to “Calibrating Your Computer’s Battery for Best Performance” for proper operational guidelines, if the issue persists, please contact Laptop Accessories immediately for technical support at
support@laptopaccessories.co.za.

Q11:When I charged the battery for the first time it still only showed 30% after hours of charging, why is this so and how can I charge the battery to 100%?
A:When such an issue arises, please refer to “Calibrating Your Computer’s Battery for Best Performance” for proper operational guidelines, if the issue persists, please contact Laptop Accessories immediately for technical support at support@laptopaccessories.co.za.

Q12:Why does the laptop show that the battery is fully charged after just 10 minutes of charging?
A:When such an issue arises, A: please refer to “Calibrating Your Computer’s Battery for Best Performance” for proper operational guidelines, if the issue persists, please contact Laptop Accessories immediately for technical support at support@laptopaccessories.co.za. B: The cells inside the battery may have deteriorated with age and the battery may have become faulty.

Q13:My battery lasted for 3 hours after the first charge but was unable to accept a charge for the second time, is it faulty?
A:When such an issue arises, please refer to “Calibrating Your Computer’s Battery for Best Performance” for proper operational guidelines, if the issue persists, please contact Laptop Accessories immediately for technical support at support@laptopaccessories.co.za. B: The cells inside the battery have deteriorated with age and the battery may have become faulty.

Q14:What is the continuous ability of laptop batteries?
A:It indicates the run-time of a battery when fully charged. With electronic equipment, the main factor is the capacity of the battery. The higher the capacity, the better. Capacity is also the third guideline of batteries, for instance; voltage, electric current and capacity. It will also show as an “mAh” value, the higher, the better.

Q15:Does one need to activate a battery when using it for the first time?
A:No, one does not. The battery will have been activated prior to leaving the manufacturers factory.

Q16:How does one recharge the battery? Is it better to recharge the battery when the laptop is switched off completely?
A:It is good to do so as this will prolong the laptop battery’s lifespan if charged when the laptop is switched off.

Q17:How does one take good care of a laptop battery?
A:Avoid recharging the battery continuously. It’s good to recharge the battery when the remaining power available drops below 10 percent. In fact, it will actually damage the battery to recharge it once the battery has 0 percent power available. Try by all means possible not to recharge the battery if it has more than 60 percent remaining power available. If you plan to not use the battery for a prolonged period of time, please store it in a cool, dry place.

Q18:How do you store the battery if it won’t be used for an extended period of time?
A:Be sure that the battery has about 70 percent remaining power available and store it in a cool, dry place between 15 and 25°C (degrees centigrade) as the battery’s integrity will weaken if the temperature is either too high or too low.

Battery questions and answers

Q1:My laptop doesn’t detect my new Sony Battery, what can I do?
A:Download the Sony BIOS Patch Update from http://www.laptopaccessories.co.za/sonybiospatch.zip and use 1 of the following keys:
CD key1: 4637DD73-25C2F198-FE0DF308-081EFD26
CD key2: CE0E92F9-21BCE0C1-45B61260-F358ADF5

Q2: I am trying to install the Sony BIOS Patch Update that I downloaded from the Laptop Accessories website but it keeps giving me an error message “System Timed Out”, how can I get past this?
A:This patch file was written on 2013/03/06, to get past the “System Time Out” error message, simply change the “Time and Date Settings” on your laptop to this date: 2013/03/06 and run the patch again as instructed and you should have no further issues installing the Sony BIOS Patch.

Q3:The battery I purchased from Laptop Accessories, LGF1, doesn’t want to fit into the laptop properly, is something wrong?
A:Nothing is wrong, this battery comes with a cover plate used on some laptops, please remove the cover plate as described on the leaflet you will have received in the battery box and then re-insert the battery into the laptop, it should fit perfectly into the battery bay provided.

Q4:My new Laptop Accessories battery is not recognized by my laptop and it does not seem to be charging, what could be the problem?
A:There may be a compatibility issue with your laptop and the new battery, or the battery itself may have developed a fault, please return the battery to Laptop Accessories so we can test it for you, send you a replacement if necessary or refund your purchase price if applicable.

Q5:My new battery isn’t charging to it’s full capacity and it’s not holding it’s charge after removing the AC adapter from the laptop, what could be the issue?
A:The battery may be faulty or the cells inside the battery may have degraded over time to such an extent that it can no longer retain an adequate charge, please return the battery to Laptop Accessories for testing and we can send you a new replacement battery or refund your purchase price, depending on the outcome of the tests.

Q6:My laptop isn’t charging my new battery and the machine keeps going into standby mode when I unplug the charger, is the battery faulty or is there something else that could be wrong?
A:Your new battery should be functioning correctly, it is highly possible that the power management settings for your laptop need to be reset or adjusted correctly. Depending on the operating system you are using, you will need to right click on the battery icon in the taskbar (bottom right corner of the screen) and select “Power Options”. A new window will open displaying the power plan currently selected for your laptop. Click on “Change plan settings” next to the selected power plan and another page will open within the current window with more options. In the bottom left area of the window click on “Change advanced power settings” and a new, smaller window will open with various other options. Scroll down the list of settings to the bottom and click the “+” next to the “Battery Options” to display the available settings for the battery and set all the values as follows:
Critical Battery Action
On battery: Hibernate
Plugged In: Hibernate
Low Battery Level
On Battery: 10%
Plugged In: 10%

Plugged In: On
Low Battery Action
On Battery: Do Nothing
Plugged In: Do Nothing
Reserve Battery Level
On Battery: 5%
Plugged In: 5%
Now click “OK” to save the changes you have made, close all of the windows that had been opened and restart your laptop. When your laptop reboots and logs back into Windows your system should read and be able to charge the battery as intended.

Q7: I inserted my new battery that I got from Laptop Accessories but now my laptop doesn’t want to turn on, did I do something wrong or could there be another problem?
A:The battery may have developed a fault or the available power left in the battery may be too low to power the onboard PCB (Printed Circuit Board) which contains the relevant information needed for your laptop to read the battery, please return the battery to Laptop Accessories for testing so we can ascertain whether the battery needs to be charged or replaced.

Q8:I purchased a new replacement battery for my laptop but it doesn’t seem to be working, now I need to send the battery back to Laptop Accessories at my own cost before I can have a replacement sent to me, why is this?
A:Although the battery you purchased may be faulty, there is no way of knowing this until we are able to test the unit to verify what the problem is as the fault may very well be with the laptop itself and not the new battery. If the fault occurred within 1 week of your purchase and after we’ve tested the unit and come to the conclusion that the fault is indeed with the battery, we will refund your shipping costs and pay for the return shipping costs to have a correctly functioning replacement sent to you.

Screen questions and answers

Q:When I connect my new replacement screen panel that I purchased from Laptop Accessories to the laptop and turn the machine on it only displays a full white background, what could be wrong?
A:The screen you have purchased may be incompatible with the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) in the laptop and as a result, can’t display correctly. Please return the screen to Laptop Accessories, together with the original screen or the exact original part number for the screen. In most cases we will be able to copy the information from the original screen onto the new replacement screen which will enable it to be read successfully by the onboard GPU and the screen can now be re-installed into the laptop.

Q3:How will I know how much a repair will cost after I have handed my device over for repair?
A:All of our pricing details for popular makes and models of tablet PC and smart phone components are listed on our website as standard practice but our professional and friendly sales consultants will be more than happy to supply you with an official quotation, in the form of a pro forma invoice, on the work to be done and the component(s) that will be required to complete the repair. If, whilst in the process of repairing the device, it is determined that the initial quote was inaccurate or requires more work or different components your sales consultant will contact you immediately via telephone to inform you of the adjusted quote and inquire whether you would still like to go ahead with the replacement or not.

Q4:How long do the quotation and repair processes take to complete?
A:The quotation process is typically just a few minutes, to ascertain what exactly the problem is, what parts and services will be required and whether we have the required components available in stock. The repair process is typically completed within 2 hours, often even sooner if it’s a popular make and model of device. You can expect a phone call from your sales consultant or the technician themselves as soon as the component replacement has been completed. If your device is less common and we do not stock the necessary component parts, we will place a special order with our suppliers to get the required parts as soon as possible, this will take about 6 – 8 weeks depending on the parts required.

Q5:Will this affect my warranty provided by my device manufacturer?
A:Although most mobile device warranties are quite thorough and cover a wide range of possible issues, most manufacturer warranties do not typically cover any accidentaly damage such a screen or glass digitizer damage as a result of dropping the device. We can not be held responsible for any of the device manufacturers current or future polocies regarding device warranties and/or specific repairs/replacements.

Q6:What if I decide not to get the device repaired once I’ve received a quotation?
A:If you choose not to have your device repaired by us, for whatever reason, we will be more than happy to return your device to you. If you are able to come to our offices to collect your device in person, no fees or charges will apply and you won’t pay anything. If you are unable to come to our offices to collect your device, then we can have it shipped back to you via courier service, however, the shipping fee will be for your account and once we have received payment for shipping we will have your device dispatched to you on the same day.
